Access to treated water in utero and childhood well-being: Evidence from rural China

Li Li and Xiao Yun

This paper examines the impacts of in utero access to treated water on childhood health. We exploit the phase-in of a major drinking water safety program in rural China to determine whether children with access to treated water in utero had better health in the first year of life and at ages 2-11. We find that prenatal access to treated water significantly lowers the probabilities of frequent sicknesses and doctor visits in the first year of life, and raises children's height and reduces the probability of frequent doctor visits at ages 2-11. Mechanism analysis shows that the association between in utero access to treated water and the incidence of gastrointestinal diseases is stronger than other types of diseases, suggesting that the health benefits may stem from the improvement in drinking water quality, rather than the increase in water quantity.
