【内容摘要】

This paper investigates whether having low-achieving classmates affects the academic achievements and noncognitive outcomes of junior high school students. Based on randomized student assignments, our results show that having low-achieving classmates decreases the test scores of students from high socioeconomic households, however, improves both mental status and social skills of students from low socioeconomic background. The negative spillovers on academic achievement are attributed to less time spent on having extracurricular classes. Moreover, students from low-socioeconomic family who are exposed to repeaters are more likely to receive praise and fewer critical comments from teachers, and have less misbehavior in the classroom. The improved teacher-student interactions contribute to the improvement in non-cognitive outcomes of students from low socioeconomic background.
