【摘要】In this paper, we study the impact of early life exposures to tropical cyclones on the long run socioeconomic performances of individuals. By merging the data of individuals born in the coastal provinces in East and South China during the 1963-1993 with typhoon track data by birth time and places, we identify significantly negative effects of gestational typhoon exposures on the education attainment and annual income in adulthood. Exploration into the channels suggest that the adverse effects on maternal or fetal health are important. Gender heterogeneity analysis shows stronger long run impact on female fetuses. Further exploiting the chronical heterogeneities shows that the rapid growth after the rural reform increases the individual resistance towards typhoons. Moreover, agriculture production reduction is an important channel besides direct impact on maternal health.
